Speaking from a jail cell, deposed native leader Benjamin Nottaway says he is a political prisoner, targeted for his outspoken opposition to the governments of Canada and Quebec.

He is the latest casualty of a power struggle that has included allegations of a political coup, fire bombings and several interventions by riot police.

Canadian spies are trying to recruit informants on a Quebec Mohawk reserve, telling their targets they're probing the national security threat posed by radical native groups and gathering intelligence on the murky, lucrative trade in contraband tobacco and online gambling.

Over the past 18 months, CSIS agents have approached several people with ties to the Kahnawá:ke Mohawk reserve south of Montreal and invited them to clandestine meetings.

GRAND-REMOUS, Que. — Algonquin activists say police have dismantled three blockades they erected on a western Quebec highway in what they described as a protest to get governments to respect treaty agreements.

A spokesman for the Barriere Lake community says that after protesters set up a blockade around 7 a.m. they were quickly confronted by as many as 50 provincial police officers toting pepper spray.

Tyendinaga Mohawk police have issued a score of criminal charges on more
than a dozen people involved in a pair of protests in the First Nations
territory last week.

Eleven adults and two young people have been issued charges in relation to
